Back in August I had the chance to assist my BFF Darion on a styled shoot at the Alberta Legislature for an Instagram takeover for the University of Alberta’s School of Retailing. The School of Retailing was hosting a wedding week on their Insta stories, spotlighting local vendors and providing guidance to brides and grooms to be. Our model Leanna was married last year and was so excited to relive her day by bringing her dress out of storage. Her dream wedding photos included beautiful gardens and, unfortunately, Mother Nature had a different plan full of rain and flooding on her wedding day.
We knew the grounds of the Alberta Legislature would be the perfect setting to show two things. First, we wanted Leanna to get the garden photographs she hoped for to go along with the gorgeous photographs from her wedding day. Secondly, we wanted to show how a very popular location can be photographed in a different way.
Galee and Minoo from the School of Retailing were super accommodating of our ridiculous giggling and awful jokes while we worked our magic with Leanna.
Leanna is the owner of Rosewood Styling and sells these gorgeous, locally sourced, gift crates. From bridesmaid proposal boxes to gifts for your groom, she absolutely has the gift box for you. Anything that includes goodies from Brianne Gabriel Cakes is amazing in my eyes!
During our Insta takeover, we provided the following tips to choosing a wedding photographer:
- Find a style that you like. While I tend to photograph in a brighter, happier way, other photographers work in a moodier and darker way.
- Find someone you connect with. You will likely spend as much time, or more, with your photographer than your husband on your wedding day. Make sure your photographer elevates your day.
- See your photographers whole portfolio and view an entire wedding gallery. As photographers, we put our best images in our portfolio. Make sure you will get an entire gallery that you will be happy with and not just a few great photographs.
- As with all of your wedding vendors, get it all in writing with a contract. This will lay out exactly what you can expect from each other, especially items like timelines, payment terms, and what will happen if one of the parties does not meet their obligations.
While this wasn’t mentioned in the Insta stories, I also want the bring up the importance of finding a well rounded photographer. If you only require photography coverage outside in the afternoon, the skills required are less than someone that will be photographing preparations in a home, an outdoor wedding, and then a reception in an artificially lit banquet hall. Katrina and Dylan’s reception took place poolside in Mexico with very little light available. By introducing light, they were able to receive well-lit images. Your photographer should feel comfortable in all situations and have the ability to light each situation properly. Your wedding only happens once. You DESERVE amazing photographs!
